Interested in Trying Out for the Team?
The Michigan State University Archery Team is a collegiate organization, comprising of some of the top college archers in the country. We strive to compete to the best of our abilities and show other schools what it means to be SPARTAN TOUGH.
How to try out
The MSU Archery Team comprises of two separate, seasonal teams. There is the Indoor Team which competes at USA Archery Indoor Nationals each year, and there is the Outdoor Team which competes at USA Archery Collegiate Outdoor Nationals.
The Indoor Team is selected before Thanksgiving Break in Fall Semester and the Outdoor Team is selected during the Spring semester. Tryout information and updates will be posted on the MSU Archery Facebook and Instagram pages. Indoor Nationals is hosted by the MSU Archery Team, therefore, no travel is required to compete on the Indoor Team. Depending on the locations of outdoor events, travel will be necessary to compete. There are additional dues for team members to help cover travel expenses.
Here's an outline of the tryouts process, using indoor season as an example:
In fall, before Thanksgiving break: At club practices or independently at the Demmer Center, archers have several weeks to shoot two Indoor USA Archery 300 rounds. Scores must be witnessed and signed by an executive board member. To make the team, the average of the two scores has to be equal to or above the qualifying score for their bow style.
The qualifying scores change every year based on average performance at Nationals. For example, in 2020 the qualifying score for the Compound Women division was a 272/300. If an archer trying out shoots a 275/300 and a 280/300, then they make the team. Every team member has try out each semester! Tryouts are open to all MSU students with their own archery equipment.
